What I’ve Been Up To

A whole heckuva lot!!

I recently got promoted and a new job at my company, plus I had some last minute travel that took place…and was over a two week period. So my hopes to get the website revamped in August were dashed, but I’m hoping to do some intensive work this weekend. I’m planning on going to Pacific Media Expo in Nov and vending there, so I’m getting the doll stuff going again, as well as artwork!

Doll Clothes wise, I’m working on Hoodies, Simple beanie hats, Gathered Skirts, Leggings and hopefully Jeans. I also plan to display my sculpted dolls there!! :D Jabari is…no where near finished and I haven’t had time to engineer his wing joints. I’ve started sculpting my warrior angel girl, Siofra, but she’s in the extremely abstract stage of sculpting. >.> I’m also getting artwork done! Primarily I’m posting work to Deviant Art or my LJ. But here are some works in progress for art and doll crap…

These are of Freya ( my Iplehouse Tatiana), wearing a cupcake skirt with ribbon suspenders. I think it is nauseatingly cute and as my prototype, will work as a pattern. The skirt is lined inside.

Tamerlane (Fairyland MNF Shiwoo) in one of my sock beanie hats :D Can roll up the bottom for a cuff, or let it hang over the eyes…

tamerlane, hat

Romy ( Souldoll Kid Liddell) in a very half finished hoodie. I have to add the zipper and the hood portion, plus go back and clean up the seams. I’m hand sewing the hoodies because of the knit material and I don’t want it to snag.

In progress artwork! Mixed media traditional of an elf girl…

I will have tons of Book reviews to post too this weekend. been reading a lot, but been reading free books mostly :]

Whoo!!

Ok, I’m sort of back? I have tons to post! But the main thing is that I’ll be at Anime Expo 2010 Artist Alley again this year! The website will be redone after AX, but my DeviantArt gallery is being updated pretty regularly! As usual, work keeps me from getting anything actually done and finished, lol.

Quick Status Update

The quick and dirty reason for lack of updates: Work. Work and I’m moving!

Webpage Update: This is coming along, slated for March 2010. I’m very excited to add tons of new stuff to the site, new projects, new everything. The site will feature this blog prominently, in an effort to keep updated content readily available. Also, I’ll be linking up my deviant art gallery and my etsy shop, among other things!

Art: I have lots of unfinished art to publish to the blog and also some finished pieces to add to my general gallery. It’s all packed in boxes right now though. Moving this week! @_@

Books: I have a TON of reviews to post. TONS. I also have acquired a Barnes and Noble Nook and have read through three books already @_@. I love my e-reader, absolutely. It’s totally perfect.

I’m very excited for the future. Things are happening in a different order than I had originally intended, but it’s all good.

Happy 2010!

So, I doodled. Plan to do more of this, among other things this year.

Been reading quite a few books. Finished book 3 of the Walker Papers by C.E. Murphy and guess what? The series has grown on me and I like. I’m glad that I pushed myself to finish the first book, Urban Shaman. As I look back, the second book made me want to strangle the main character, BUT it was a sign I was invested in her. Which is good! Because I loved the third book, Coyote Dreams and really want to get the 4th, but it’s not in mass market paperback yet. Yeah, my pet peeve. In other news, while I had intended to start reading the stepsister scheme by jim hines…er…I got distracted. By another book which I hadn’t finished and also, facebook. Sigh.

Back to work tomorrow. Lots of crazy in store for the future, I think. But good crazy.

Interesting Thoughts.

I actually love reading author’s blogs. Some of my favorites are Ilona Andrews, Lisa Shearin and Jim Hines. They all write some of my favorite books. But in reading their blogs, I got some insight into the publishing world, writers methods, questions, etc. That led me to reading some literary Agent blogs. I was browsing the blog for BookEnds, LLC and in the post called "The Writer’s Process", a short paragraph made such an impression on me:

"The truth is that there is no perfect way to write a book. Nearly every author I talk with looks at a critique partner or friend and wishes she could write like that. Someone else always makes it look easy, especially when they manage to tackle what we most struggle with. Writing is creative, writing a book is a creative process, and when it comes to creativity there is no perfect answer to how it should be done."

It never should be surprising to me, but it always is — we, as creative types are always fixated in some manner on “measuring up” to the very subjective greatness/prowess/skillset of someone else. From my own experience, there is a huge difference between seeking to push your limits and seeking to becomes “as good as” someone else. The latter always leaves me stressed out and disappointed. Trying a new technique or doing something I haven’t done before is rewarding and best of all, fun. Even if I fail in the “final output”, there are always, always, always aspects of the journey that I enjoyed.

I guess all this is simply to say — try lots of new things. It’s ok if it doesn’t work the way you planned. You’re still awesome, either way.

Eeep!

So, I jumped off the etsy wagon and put up an etsy store. I figured “why not”? :]

It’s called “Colors and Crafts by karlyl“. I need to push myself more and do more artwork and crafting and yes, need to make a little extra cash, so I’m going to be putting up the rest of my leftover convention prints up on the site, as well as these little skirts I’ve been making for my BJD :] I have a ton of cute fabrics that I’m making clothes and stuff from and I have leftover material, so I thought, what the hey, why not?

I will have a new art piece up in the next few days — one of the angel pieces I’ve been working on.

To be honest, this is also an attempt to not just be a science engineering type of person, but also to grow my artistic ability. I’ve been pretty art blocked/depressed lately, so I’ve been wanting to push myself in the direction of things I really enjoy. There’s been a lot going on in my life and too much revolves around my job, money, family…it’s been a crappy couple of years. I need to grow and stretch to become the person that I want to be. I’ve been giving up too much of myself and feeling absolutely empty and it’s time that all that changed. Follow the dream.

OMG, Asian Ball Jointed Dolls

So, I joined the community of folks with ABJDs. Meet Freya!

Freya, Iplehouse JID Tatiana

She’s an Iplehouse JID Tatiana, stands about 43-44cm tall and is absolutely adorable! I resisted BJDs for years, but finally gave in to the insanity and it is SO MUCH FUN.

I’ve been putting togther outfits for her and even made some jeans that need a few tweaks, but otherwise fit remarkably well! I’ll be posting pictures of the jeans and other random clothes I make for her hopefully soon :)

Book Reviews!

I know, I know. Isn’t this an art blog? Well yes. And it’ll also house my book reviews. :) All tagged “bookcrack”. Y’know, for when you just need a hit? :D Also, I’m not some in depth reviewer and I don’t like to discuss the particulars in the book — jsut want to give an overall impression >:)

Green Rider
By Kristen Britain

[Karigan G'ladheon, running away from school, is traveling through a deep forest when a galloping horse pounds up to her, its rider impaled by two black-shafted arrows. With his dying breath, he tells her he is a Green Rider, one of the magical messengers of the King. Before he dies, he makes Karigan swear to deliver the message he's carrying, and gives her his green coat, with the symbolic brooch of his office. Pursued by unknown assassins, following a path only her horse seems to know, Karigan becomes a legendary Green Rider—for when given to the right person, a Rider's brooch awakens the magic inside.... ]

When I picked up this book, I’d been looking for something more traditional EPIC fantasy than paranormal fantasy. I was desperately in need of a good book not related to vampires, werewolves and witches oh my!

Well, I definitely got some good fantasy, though not perhaps epic. Karigan is the type of main character I like—a girl who isn’t simpering. Seriously, I don’t ask for much, just don’t give me a girl who is a whiney baby in a dress and we’ll be fine :) . She’s got balls, to put it bluntly, but she’s got big flaws and isn’t perfect or even on her way to perfection – it’s nice to see a character develop over long periods of time. Her relationships also develop over time, not instantly. All the characters, to me, have a fleshed out feel – I cared about every character, even the ones that appeared only to die a few pages later. That’s really different for me – I typically only care about the main character, maybe one of the others. It reminds me of Anne Bishop’s Tir Alainn series, how while I had favorites, I really enjoyed most of the characters. Also, this author puts together a really nice worldview, with tons of the traditional fantasy settings, except throw in something vaguely resembling the Pony Express a la the Wild West. That particular twist is what makes this not just “another fantasy book”, but a fun, suspenseful read. You can definitely put yourself in Karigan’s shoes and there are tons of little tidbits that make you know there will be more books later. The action waxes and wanes as it should – you never get into 200 pages of non-stop action where everyone gets trashed beyond belief and yet STILL manages to kick ass and take names. Even when they shouldn’t. Through sheer force of WILL and all that jazz. Yeah.

So, I give this a THUMBS UP. Definitely worth the time.

First Rider’s Call
By Kristen Britain

[Once a simple student, Karigan G'ladheon finds herself in a world of deadly danger and complex magic, compelled by forces she cannot understand, when she becomes a Green Rider—one of the magical messengers of the king. Forced to accept a fate she never would have chosen, she attempts to return to her life as the daughter of a wealthy merchant, but the magic in her blood is too strong. Pursued by the ghost of the legendary First Rider, she rejoins the Green Riders to confront an ancient evil. ]

This is the 2nd book in the Green Rider series, staring Karigan. I mentioned before that Green Rider wasn’t really EPIC fantasy. Apparently, we’re starting to move towards that direction, though a wee bit less intense than perhaps I’d like? This installment is definitely a good read – I found the details of Karigan’s reluctance to be a Rider intriguing and totally a normal reaction for a normal person. After the last adventure she had, honestly, unless you’re an adrenaline junkie, I can’t see you wanting to be a Green Rider, heh. Life span could be a wee bit too short. The magic aspects get a little more explained here as well as history about the Rider Corps – I love history. There’s some dark foreshadowing about events that will obviously happen in the future and I do find myself annoyed with some of the D’Yer wall stuff – not progressing quickly enough for me. I’m impatient :). I like quick resolution, tee hee. I can’t call this the Empire Strikes back of the series, because it’s not, but it’s no Return of the Jedi either. It’s like….the battle between Darth Maul, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Very sweet and awesome, but GEEZ they shoulda kept Darth Maul around longer? Maybe.

This is also a big character development book – not as much hardcore “journey” action as before, but still. THUMBS UP. Still a great series.

The High King’s Tomb
By Kristen Britain

[A thousand years ago the armies of the Arcosian Empire, led by Mornhavon the Black, crossed the great sea and tried to conquer the land of Sacoridia —and during Karigan G'ladheon's early years as a Green Rider, Mornhavon's spirit, sensing weakness in his prison walls and seeking vengeance, began to wake. With the ghostly help of the First Rider, Karigan had managed to drive off the spirit of Mornhavon—but for how long, no one could know. And now, the descendants of those Arcosians are ready to strike, reaching out to claim the land their forebears had tried to conquer. Worse, these vengeful enemies had spent generations honing their powers of dark magic—a force against which the Sacoridians had no defense.... ]

This is the 3rd installment to the Green Rider series. This is the Empire Strikes Back of the series, certainly. It’s got some great segments – the mythology, particularly The Patron, WOW. Definitely a lot more insight in the magic of the series, lots of character development, more awesome supporting characters. It’s a setup for the EPICness that should be following, something more along the lines of the 1st book, hopefully even more awesome. There was honestly SO MUCH groundwork being laid in this series, dealing with various fallout from the previous books and more.

One thing I really, really have to commend the author for – she ages her characters very gracefully and gives them realistic amounts of time to evolve and grow. I have a few series I greatly enjoy, but the events — all absolutely EPIC LIFE CHANGING WOW events, more so fast that I can’t suspend my disbelief than the characters are still functioning after the torture the authors put them through.

I definitely enjoyed this installment – it made me VERY excited for the next book. THUMBS UP. You need to read it.

We’re Back!

The sketchblog is back! I’ll be posting (mostly) sketches and WIPs here for your viewing pleasure, as well as a widget for displaying my most recent deviant art posts! I will use deviant art for my fanart and commissions mostly and this sketchblog for my original stuff. To start us off, here’s a piece of fanart I did for the Gathering of the Gargoyles — Moonspell.

Revamp and Overhaul

In light of the pending site overhaul, I have deleted all my old blog entries. They are attracting TONS of spam no matter what I did or how I closed off comments, so we are starting fresh in a new way. I plan to attempt to keep an artblog going as my public art exposure since my livejournal is private at this point, but we shall see what actually occurs.

I’ll be back though :)
